Buying a New Hospital Beds: Things You Should Know

When considering buying hospital beds, there two broad categories: manual and electric variants. The less expensive is the manual bed but it also has fewer features and positioning options that are present in the electric hospital beds. The electric medical beds are easier to use and are more convenient due to their different controls and hand-foot operated systems. The choice should be done on the basis of the budget of the purchase as well on the purpose to be served by these beds. Some of the feature sets to be considered while purchasing the beds are: -
Power transport functions to make the transportation of patients from one room to another easier and quicker. It is of great help for the hospital staff and very convenient as compared to manual transferring.
Storage spaces are present which allow for storing basic emergency kits, oxygen tanks, and other important equipment that can be of use on a regular basis for that particular patient.
Side rail attachments: these offer protection to the patients from falling from the sides of the bed. There are also detachable options available to use the side rails as and when required.
Weighing scales: they also come with a variation that has a weighing skill attached and in-built in the bed. It helps taking weights of the patients on a regular basis.
Different adjustable positions: the beds come with automatic positioning systems to change its shape according to the requirements. Some of the positions are Trendelenburg, reverse Trendelenburg, fowler’s position, and many more.
Apart from the choice of bed, a mattress also plays an important role when the comfort is concerned. The mattress ideal for hospitals should be supportive, comfortable, and easy to clean and wipe.
The investment in a hospital bed should be a wise one. The high one-time cost should be done against expecting several years of reliable service and usage of the beds. Some steps which can be taken to ensure the longevity in the lifetime of the beds can be:
The staff should be well aware of the usage of beds and should know how to operate the different functions of the bed.
If there are any minor problems in the beds, they should be rectified as soon as they are discovered as they may turn to be bigger problems if ignored over time and cost higher for repair.
The equipment kept in the storage beds should be disinfected before the bed is used for the next patient to ensure hygiene and safety.
The beds should not be used for storage and other purposes for which they are not meant.

Also, the supplier for the beds should be someone you and your staff trusts. In case of emergencies or repair and replacement, a trustworthy supplier can be counted upon to solve the issue and keep things functioning smoothly. If considering a larger purchase in terms of number and investment, it would be advisable to take help from consultants for making wise and informed decisions.
